What is eCommerce?

eCommerce or electronic commerce is any business, or commercial transaction that involves the transfer of information across the Internet. It covers a range of different types of businesses, from consumer based retail stores, through auction and bidding sites, to business exchanges trading goods and services between companies, organizations and corporations. While the vast majority of E-Commerce still deals in physical commodities, a large emerging percentage of it is conducted entirely for virtual items such as subscriptions to premium content on a website, eBooks and so on. When implemented properly, ecommerce often brings in more sales while offering time and cost saving features when compared to traditional methods of ‘brick and mortar’ stores.

What are the requirements for adding a fully functional online store? The most important requirement is an effective online shopping cart. This is software that allows consumers to purchase goods and or services conveniently and tracks customer’s orders.

The next step is a means of accepting online payments by obtaining a merchant account and accepting credit cards through a secure online payment gateway.
